Wade's Words of Wisdom

Dear Men of KONOS,

Below is a cute note from Lisa in NY regarding the "Seasons," or lack thereof in Texas. My answer turned into a soapbox that I wanted to share with you men, and certainly with your wives. There are some truths here that are worthy of sharing and talking about.

Blessings,

Hello Everyone,

We are doing the calendars and seasons unit right now and having a lot of fun. I am changing our months a bit since we don't have "April showers" in April ... we still have snow in April and our big rainy time is late May into June!! I was thinking though that this curriculum was written in Texas where there is no snow (snowmen in January, etc) ... and that got me thinking about how you all handled teaching the months of the year. Do you all in Texas say "up north they have snow in January" and do those of you in the north say "down south they fly kites in March!" :) I just thought this would be a fun topic to see how different areas handled the months of the year - especially those in Canada and other countries!

Just wondering how other families did this unit! :)

Dear Lisa and All,

I beg your pardon. We have 4 seasons here. We have snow in Jan. or Feb. and many showers in April too. The leaves fall off the trees in Oct. and November. I have reported snow here before, in fact we have an occasional blizzard where the drifts might go as high as an 1/8 or a 1/4" or so. We even had a couple of inches of snow last year and weren't sure whether we could get the front door open or not! LOL!

Texans have shorts for summer and longjohns for winter. Most homes have fireplaces when it gets colder than humans can survive like in the 40's!

We know our seasons well. My favorite season is fall. Guess that is just the football coach coming out in me! Let the air turn crisp and the leaves start to golden up and I am ready for my guys to take on all comers on a cool, clear Sat. morning at Fretz Park in Dallas. Umm, um. That was the good ole days. Unbalanced right, dive right. 34 lead. Split left, sweep left!! Yipeee! Touchdown. Now run Fake dive right-pass right for the extra point. Works every time. We're Superbowl bound if we can get passed those Redskins. They've got that one fast kid that we've got to keep bottled up. (Makes my blood pressure rise just thinking about it!)

I spent 5 years in public school and another 9 years coaching my three older sons in Pee-Wee football so there are many great memories about that phase of my life. What's more, it is not over yet because Jordan starts his third year of coaching at Christian schools in North Texas. Friday afternoons are still filled with the sites and smells and sounds of pads popping as young men do what young men have done for thousands of years, prepare for and then meet the enemy on the battlefield. David met Goliath and these kids today are doing the same thing against the Eagles and Steelers and Falcons. The difference is, the kids today come home smiling in an SUV instead of having their lifeless bodies drug around by a horse at the end of a rope!

Men, sounds barbaric doesn't it but God put the fight in young men just as surely as he put playing with dolls and handling babies in young girls. These are His ways of preparing a new generation for the work (and wars) He has ahead of them.

There are a few loud voices out there saying to withhold your children from playing competitive sports, especially football, but I say, let them play. In fact, I think nearly every kid should have at least one uniform and be a part of a team. Be careful not to allow the sports thing run the life of your family for the next 10 years, but there are many benefits to be enjoyed from a good sports team and a good program.

The admonition is BALANCE!!

Blessings,
Wade
