Wade's Words of Wisdom

7/28/03

Dear Men Of KONOS,

This salutation was at the beginning of an email post to our KONOS group asking for help finding a certain book title. The post is not important to us men, but the "label" certainly is.

Hello sisters (and brothers--few in comparison, yet no less treasured),
Kat

I wrote Kat back with the following

I’ve never been deemed a 'Treasure' before. I better sit a little taller today, "I’m a treasure!"

Reminds me of the Zig Ziglar story. A family had one daughter who was totally negative about everything. She even hated Honey-Nut Cheerios! They decided to make an effort to change her outlook on life by giving her a better moniker so they labeled her, their "happy child." Anytime she entered the room or was introduced to someone new, they added, ". . . and she is our happy child. She loves life and makes the best out of any situation." This was a stretch for them to call her "Happy" when she was anything but. Pretty soon, the little girl began to introduce herself with a big smile and say, "Hi. I’m Carla. They call me the happy child because I can make the best out of any situation." The label stuck and Carla became their happiest child.

I hate to bring this up men but what kind of label are you pinning to your children’s shirts?

Try a new label for each of your children and even for your wife this week and let me know how it goes.

Bless you all,
Wade

P.S. One more story: I am also reminded of the great Kansas City Royals slugger, George Brett, arriving at his father’s home after his best season ever. In fact, he had just had the greatest season any hitter had had since Ted Williams back in 1941. Brett missed batting 400 by a few percentage points. (I’ll paraphrase the rest because I don’t remember the exact words.) He was beaming as he walked up the front walk. His dad came out to greet him, but instead of joy, his dad just said, You missed batting 400 by one hit. You’re such a loser. Shocked, hurt and dismayed, George turned around, got in his car and drove off.

Sometimes our words are more powerful than we can imagine and sadly, they can leave an impression for a lifetime! Let’s make sure our lasting impression is gold, not barbed wire!
