What is the educational philosophy of
KONOS?
When we started teaching our little first grader in
1984, we wrote down some goals we had for our homeschool. We wanted to:
-
Develop Godly Character
-
Shape a Christian
Worldview
-
Foster A Love of Learning
-
Make School Fun and Active
-
Read Real Books
-
Teach all Kids
Together Multi-Level (Different Age Groups)
-
Build Lasting Family Relationships
-
Equip Our Children for Life
-
Excel Academically
-
Teach Our Children to
Think
WRITTEN FOR HOMESCHOOL
It is important to understand that KONOS was
written by two homeschooling moms for homeschool. They never had thirty
3rd graders in their homes and you probably don’t either. As a result,
they were unwilling to use the same methodologies that our public and most
private schools use, i.e. the workbook/textbook curricula where the child
sits in his desk all day long filling in the blanks and answering the
questions at the back of the chapter. They wanted to use the kitchen,
flowerbeds, garage, and the world around them as part of their classroom
and laboratory. They also wanted to train their children in Godly
character so they would grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord. To do
this Jessica Hulcy and her friend, Carole Thaxton, wrote curriculum for
two first graders wrapping each unit around a character trait of God.
MULTI-LEVEL TEACHING
They study one character trait, such as attentiveness, orderliness, obedience, honor, trust, wisdom,
honesty, resourcefulness and cooperation for a month or
two . At the same time, they integrate
into each unit, science and social studies, art and music, great
literature and all of their reading, health and safety, and Bible. Each
volume is really a teacher’s manual which always includes activities for
K-8th grade, so a mother can teach her 8th grader, her 5th grader and her
kindergartner at the same time using one curriculum.
TAILORED EDUCATION
With KONOS, you have the structure of
weekly lesson plans including daily activities written as part of each
unit but still have the flexibility to tailor your curriculum to meet the
needs of your own family. You won’t just be doing school at home,
you’ll be taking full advantage of the opportunity to home school, and
there is a bigggg difference in the two concepts. We caution parents to
examine their goals for their own home school. As our Oklahoma friend,
Erin Blain asks, "Are you interested in merely GRADUATION or is
EDUCATION the real goal?" At KONOS we are first interested in education
as the cake and then graduation just naturally follows as the cherry on
top.
CHARACTER PLUS ACADEMICS
KONOS does not include math, phonics for the
little ones, or grammar workbook and speller for the older ones. Please
order these materials from another supplier. KONOS does cover everything
else: science, social studies, art, music, literature and all of their
reading, health and safety, and Bible. All of the subjects studied are intertwined
around a character trait of God, so the art project, the
class reading and the English writing assignment will be part of what the
kids are doing in science or social studies. As an example, while studying
Indians under Attentiveness, the girls were attentive as they made a papoose carrier, while the boys
were attentive as they made
a loincloth and bow and arrows. Then they were both attentive to the
poetic devices as they read the poem Hiawatha.
TESTIMONIAL
A KONOS user writes,
"KONOS is more than a curriculum. It is a
lifestyle of learning and building a family with God at the center of the
training and instruction you give to your children."
KONOS desires to build up and encourage
families through educational teaching strategies, through developing
outstanding curricula, and through the training of families under the
guidance of Scripture. (Deut
6:6-7)
